Ransomware. It’s a very prevalent buzzword in today’s IT sphere, whether it be the huge government targets or countless SMB victims, any machine can be in danger.
Lets break it down shall we? Ransom “a sum of money or other payment demanded or paid for the release of a prisoner.” and ware “a combining form extracted from software, occurring as the final element in words that refer to a specified kind or class of software.” In English? Ransomware is malicious piece of software that locks down a users machine by means of encryption. The victim then needs to pay the bounty in order to receive the decryption keys to decrypt the machine and files.
Recently, Datto named Ransomware the number one threat to all SMBs. The report surveyed 2,400 managed service providers (MSPs) that provide IT support for half a million SMBs globally. It found that ransomware attacks occur frequently, and are expected to increase. More than 55% of those surveyed said their clients experienced a ransomware attack in the first six months of 2018, and 35% said their clients were attacked multiple times in the same day. Some 92% of MSPs said they predict the number of attacks will continue at current or increased rates, the report found.
What does that mean to your SMB? Downtime. Downtime absolutely cripples a small business due to loss of revenue.
What is the cost for your SMB? Well, Datto found that the attack costs SMBs on average $46,800, while the ransom averages $4,300 per attack.
